About Tennessee State University

Tennessee State University, or TSU for short, is a land-grant university located in Nashville, which is the capital of the US state of Tennessee and the county seat of Davidson County, a major hub for the health care, music, publishing, banking and transportation industries. During the 2008 census, the population of Nashville-Davidson County was estimated at a number of more than 620 000 inhabitants, making Nashville the second most populous city in the state after Memphis.

TSU's history began in 1909, when it was organized as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, which began serving students on June 19, 1912, the institution turning into a four-year teachers' college in 1922. In 1958, the college was elevated to full-fledged land-grant university status by the Tennessee State Board of Education. The present-day Tennessee State University exists as a result of the merger on July 1, 1979, of Tennessee State University and the former University of Tennessee at Nashville.

 

The university offers today its students a vast number of educational programs, in various fields of study, including 42 baccalaureate degrees, 21 master's degrees, as well as the two-year Associate of Science degree in nursing, dental hygiene, and doctoral degrees areas such as: Computer Information Systems Engineering, Biology, Psychology, Public Administration and Education.

 

Athletics

TSU's athletic teams are known as the Tigers. The teams compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, including in basketball, football, golf, tennis, softball, volleyball, track and field and cross country, their colors being blue and white.
